When writing a story there are two main possible settings. One is the real world. This means that the story deals with issues that could happen in our world. There is no magic or unrealistic technology. It isn't set in the future, but in the past or present. These stories can connect to people on a real-life level. They often look into issues that are happening to real people. The second setting is in a made-up world. These stories can hit on real-life issues, but they aren't as direct. Stories like these are often fun and/or quick reads. People seem to love Fantasy books, because they take them away from the real world and transport them to an amazing place.
